I am a semi-retired Folksinger, retired Army Bandsman, currently teaching Guitar Ensemble, String Ensembles, Concert Choir, and Recorder Ensemble, grades 3 - 8. Next time I retire though, I am going right back into folk singing. (It keeps me humble)
Songs are like children. They have to get out on their own and find their own identity. I started the process by writing them, but you complete the process by learning them, passing them down to young minds, and keeping them alive. I sincerely hope that one or two of my little songs will live on past the time when anyone will know I actually wrote them. It is the sweetest form of immortality I could possibly think of. I would love to hear if something you found on this page convinced you to become a member. I don't get anything for it and I'm not looking for bragging rights. I would just like to know if this page is helping out Mike in any way. I don't want his generosity to me, to become a burden for this site. If something else was a deciding factor, be sure and let Mr. Daly know about that as well. If there is anything that any one of us can do to keep this online, I'm sure we can find a way to get it done. Oh, and if you actually read down this far, thank you bunches. My students are used to me but I may be a bit overwhelming to the general public.

Description: I originally put this together this for my advanced guitar ensemble but the rest of the groups started grabbing it out of the bin and insisting that we "Try" it. We have played this with combined guitar ensembles at least three times now and it always seems to work. One student plays electric guitar and solos at the "C" section Another student plays bass guitar and eventually we hope to do a version with a drum set. This is the kind of song that students seem to come in and practice on their own and it has precipitated many jam sessions. I use this song to encourage students to transition from the point where they are playing "riffs" over and over again, to the place where they understand that you need to play the entire song to have credibility as a player.

Description: This is a late first year to early second year piece I put together because I had already used another piece I wrote that addressed the Pentatonic Scale the year before. It is important to have three to four years of material built up so my students aren't looking at the same music. Parents often have students who are close together in classes as well so it's good to have a wide variety of material available whenever possible.

Description: This is a two page chart, with and without shorthand notation. I wrote this up a few months ago, without any real hope of ever using it after I got done. I needed something in a hurry this morning however, so I gave it to my students and they actually liked it. It is written in half time for beginning players, so it is a bit deceptive. The tune is probably from the Medieval era and is written by the famous immortal tune-smith A. Nonny Mouse. Enjoy.

Description: Another one page sheet with all parts on the same page. There are two parts for Violin, Viola and Cello. I haven't had any string Basses, but they can read off the Cello part with no difficulty. Encourage students to learn both parts, play the song twice and tell them to switch parts. Ask the Cellos to play part one and everyone else to play part two? How many other ways can you play this and use it to get more variety?
