I am a semi-retired Folksinger, retired Army Bandsman, currently teaching Guitar Ensemble, String Ensembles, Concert Choir, and Recorder Ensemble, grades 3 - 8. Next time I retire though, I am going right back into folk singing. (It keeps me humble)
Songs are like children. They have to get out on their own and find their own identity. I started the process by writing them, but you complete the process by learning them, passing them down to young minds, and keeping them alive. I sincerely hope that one or two of my little songs will live on past the time when anyone will know I actually wrote them. It is the sweetest form of immortality I could possibly think of. I would love to hear if something you found on this page convinced you to become a member. I don't get anything for it and I'm not looking for bragging rights. I would just like to know if this page is helping out Mike in any way. I don't want his generosity to me, to become a burden for this site. If something else was a deciding factor, be sure and let Mr. Daly know about that as well. If there is anything that any one of us can do to keep this online, I'm sure we can find a way to get it done. Oh, and if you actually read down this far, thank you bunches. My students are used to me but I may be a bit overwhelming to the general public.

Description: Part two of this song is much harder than part one. This is one of those songs that are specifically written so that students having difficulty with hand to eye coordination get a chance to play the melody too. The title started out as Dodge ball, but it turned into dancing all day long when Gingersnaps, our combination Dachshund/Jack Russell Terrier, started dancing all over the Family room as I was playing it. I have never seen a dog dance to recorder music before. It was adorable and unsettling all at the same time!
Description: This is an original piece I put together when a student asked me for a solo that would help him master playing in tenths. (Tenths are a third plus one octave) It has been performed many times since then, despite the fact that it is really a simple thing and no trouble at all to write. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I have enjoyed watching it being performed. Warning: Small children tend to get up and dance to this.

If you haven't looked at it yet, remember that the thumb is assumed to be on the octave hole unless there is an open "O" to the left of the fingering. Everything else is pretty much self explanatory, but there is a sheet for the shorthand notation system here as well.
Description: This is the school song for Dolphin Terrace Elementary School in El Paso Texas. If you ever need to write a school song, you may want to look at this one first. I had a lot of help from students, and especially from Mr. Cano, who had some definite ideas about what a school song should have in it. School songs are very important for self esteem, building a sense of community, and just because while you are singing - for those few brief moments everyone is thinking about the same thing all at once. That is very unusual and special!

Description: This is a song that I wrote to emphasis the P-I-M-A-M-A finger style. We use this as exercise four of our warm ups in class, but wanted some practical application as well. This is an excellent song to teach students prior to teaching them "House of the Rising Sun." This is written for three guitars and contains shorthand notation for beginners, as well as for students with special needs.

Description: This is a Guitar Solo based on a theme from Antonin Dvorak's "New World Symphony." It is an intermediate solo based on the fact that there is some playing in seventh and fifth position. Most of the guitar solo arrangements I have played have a static bass line so I have tried to add some movement to this one. There is no shorthand notation, but I did put in some suggested fingerings in measures 22 - 23 and 25. (The measures in seventh and fifth position. There is also a partial Barre in measure 23 and 25.
Description: Mix and Match parts for the finale to the New World Symphony. this was done really quickly by request and I have used it quite a few times since then. The students are always looking for it and whenever we have to do something really quickly, this is the score they always ask for. It is really good for graduations, Honor society ceremonies, visiting dignitaries, and whatever else your ensemble is called on to do at the last minute. I really should go back to this and do it up right. Maybe next summer?
